The Tories deprioritise social security and in-work poverty

If the Tories are supposedly launching their big announcements at this year’s Conference, those looking for a fair social security system will be sorely disappointed.

In spite of all their talk of helping people get back to work, they have today announced a new £2.8 million app and £1.2 million extra work coaching support, which amounts to just 35 new advisors.

But when there are 14.3 million people in poverty in the country, and the social security system is helping to push people further into poverty, this barely scratches the surface of what’s needed.

Over the weekend, Labour committed £3 billion to scrap Universal Credit and recruit an additional 5,000 advisors, amid a raft of other policies, aimed at building a just social security system – one that alleviates and ends poverty, not one that drives people into it.
